Cryolite(Sodium Fluoaluminate, Aluminium Sodium Fluoride)
[Molecular Formula] Na3AlF6
[Molecular Weight] 209.94
[Properties]
Clorless monocrystal crystal, usually appears offwhite, pink, yellowish or black because of impurity, usually present as indiscerptible compact block with glass lustre, specific gravity: 2.9-3.0, melting point: 1000°C; slight soluble in water, aqueous solution is acidic, decompose to toxic hydrogen fluoride gas when meeting with sulfuric acid.
[Uses]
It is mainly used as fluxing agent in aluminum production, insecticide for crops, melting agent and opaquefier for enamel glaze; also used to produce opal glass and as electrolyte in producing aluminum alloy, iron alloy and boiling steel; as ingredient of grindstone and as raw material in dip coating of aluminum on iron and steel.
